No that is not a true statement. I have a tattoo across my lower back and had an epidural. Here is an article on the subject.

Some doctors are afraid to insert a needle for an epidural through a tattoo, but if there is room to go around it they will. I am a medical student and I haven't been able to find a good reference on where the epidural goes relative to where my tattoos are (its between the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae, but the untrained eye can't exactly see where those are from the outside).
Long story short, it may depend on the doctor, but if one doctor is afraid to do it another doctor probably will.

It depends on the amount of scarring that is caused by the tattoo ... basically on how good of a job the artist does. If the area is badly scarred, then it is harder and riskier to insert the epidural. However, if the tattoo isn't huge, there could still be room above it or below it.

Hi Shannon, I don't see why that would make a differents.I do have one thing to say, to bunker. You are NO WAY a tattoo artist, and have NO BUSINESS calling girls with tattoos a tramp stamp. Just because your to much of a chicken S H I T to get a tattoo, women are not tramp stamps.I really would like you to drag your sorry A S S to California, and call the women who live here a tramp stamp, and lets see just how long you would last. You little chicken S H I T. If you would like to email me,with your stupid thoughts i am Clowmy. Sorry Shannon, but this guy is everywhere stating tramp stamp, and i find this in very bad taste.
Your friend Clowmy.

I've heard that if you have a new tattoo, you can't get it. Something like you have to have had it for a year or something. I'm not positive. I would ask both a doctor and your tattoo artist. Good luck!

A tattoo is only ink in your like, i think third layer of skin...which ever i' not sure, but it's just in your skin, but an epidural actually goes past your skin into the wut? spine or something..i don't think it has any correlation....humm..interesting..i have a tattoo on my lower back, if you find someone out, let me know...

I've heard this a lot lately, but I don't know if it is true. According to this guy http://www.painfreebirthing.com/english/tattoo.htm , an associate doctor at Harvard Med. School, it's not that big of a problem

I've never heard of it and it doesn't really make sense to me. The only way they would even know if you had one would be if you told them. Unless of course, you're laying on your stomach when you're getting ready to deliver. Never saw or heard of that either.
