Yay another lets use a historical situation to discredit Christianity! I'll play!

First if you paid a million dollars for a car and it broke down would you take a sledge hammer to it? No.

There were some slave masters who would beat their slaves into submission but never bad enough to keep them from being able to work. Some slave owners would teach their slaves how to read and basic math skills to make them more productive and some would physically abuse them to keep them under control. Slave owners were all different but as to the concept of owning slaves it's nothing the south invented. Slavery dates back to ancient times and is still practiced today in the Muslim world and in Asia.

Your question sounds rhetorical and about 140 years too late. The slave owners you're refferring to are all dead and therefore cannot be asked why they did what they did but if they could i'm sure they'd find some religious text to defend their actions.

The bard said it best "Even the devil can cite the scriptures to suit his own purpose."

People have been using religion to suit their own needs throughout history and not just those who use Christianity. Even if there were no religion they'd use something, anything to further their agenda like when the Navy used science to try to keep African American men from being used as anything but cooks and munitions handlers.

Sorry but you're asking the question far too late and why does it not take into account the Christians who were abolitionists such as Rev. William Weston Patton who was instrumental in getting the idea of the Emancipation Proclamation put forward or Rev. John Rankin, Rev. Theodore Weld, Rev. Beriah Green and Rev. John Fee to name a few? In fact Rev. Parker Pillsbury was notorious as a rabble rouser for excommunicating any preacher who spoke in favor of slavery.

To read what Christians were doing against slavery read the book “Slavery, the Bible, Infidelity: Pro-slavery Interpretations of the Bible: Productive of Infidelity” by Rev. William W. Patton (4 August 1846).

Believe it or not, there are people who attend church that are not Christians.
There is not a person alive today that has owned a slave.
Blacks took other blacks as slaves in Africa....
they traded them among themselves as cattle,
they sold them to other countries such as Egypt.
England saw there was money to be made...
Anywhere there was money there was England.
England bought slaves where ever they could get them.
Including Ireland and Scotland( my family came here as slaves)
The Southern US had slaves for hundreds of years
The people in the North(none of which were black)
disagreed with the practice and thus...WAR...
If the white people in churches in the north hadn't done
all they could for the freedom of blacks, (this includes secretly teaching them to read)we would probably still have slaves today.
People who are being treated as horses and cows, have very little chance to free themselves. Or learn anything except what
they are being shown.
I don't say God is my master, I say he is my Father.

Yes, several other people said it already, but I would like to reiterate it...I've never owned any slaves. I think it might be illegal. I read that somewhere. God is not my "master", I have a personal relationship with God through Christ.

hmmm....

If you are pointing to the "black eye" of American history where Protestant and Baptist Christian land owners beat, whipped, raped and dehumanized their black slaves, then definitely American Christians should accept this reality because it was and still is an historical fact which cannot be denied.

However, that was several hundred years ago. Blacks are considered equal now and slavery is gone. Unfortunately, bigotry, prejudice and hate remain because of certain white Americans who were brainwashed by their fathers who, in turn, were brainwashed by their fathers to hate non-whites and non-Christians.

It's calle dthe mistakes of humanity. Everyone is human and everyone makes mistakes. How many times did you fall down before you learned to walk, skate, or ride a bike? Humanity makes mistakes big or small. Sometimes humans desire power and think it's okay to use God's name, however look at where they are now, dead and powerless...

The Bible never uses the word slave, people had servants, and servants were free to leave their masters, people may have beat servants, but it was against the Bible.

Many servants chose to continue serving their masters because they were treated well.
