Hello!
Yes, there really are people that are Kleptomaniacs. And yes, they know they are stealing, that's part of the dangerous thrill. But, they cannot help it, it is an addiction. And a mental disorder as well.
Here's a link to tell you more.
I hope this helps!
Take care!

As others have said a Klepto is someone who has the inability to resist stealing. Don't get me wrong...they know they are doing it but they do it for different reasons. Most courts do not find it as a justified reason for the crime.

I don't like labels. Ever so some folks have a compulsion to steal.
I find it interesting that we all have minds but, no hand book for the operation or the workings of the mind. Try reading Dianetic's The Modern Science Of Mental Health by L. Ron Hubbard. Try to find a copy written no later than 1982 as alterations have been made in the newer printings. eBay is a good source. I view the book as a hand book for the mind.
Note, my father was one who had the compulsion to steal, it was strange as he knew it was not ok and he even stole from me. He got nervous and vague when I tried to talk to him about it. It was truly a compulsion and I've noticed a lot of others have compulsions, like driving drunk, screwing around when married to name a few very common ones.

you bet there is, I work with one. he doesn't even know hes doing it. I watch him go over and get into my tools, take something. Then ill go look in his box at the end of the day and see half tools there...i confront him and he doesn't know how they got there... its a hoot!!! Everyday the same thing- and they seriously don't know they are doing it! its like hes daydreaming when he does it too! If i go up and confront him while hes in the act he get all startled like he just woke up or something, and get s embarrassed. hes a nice guy. but i wouldn't work in a diamond mine with him.. Its a trip.

"Kleptomania" is simply an OCD - Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder.

They know they are stealing - they usually know it is wrong - but they cannot stop themselves.
