Drinking water is a good idea, if you mean after you've choked on the saliva. Just continue to cough if you are choked by it.

Keep on coughing until you feel relieved. The reason for this is that your body makes you cough out any foreign material (yes even your own saliva) from your airways and lungs. If you drink water right away, you risk 'aspirating' your saliva and water into your lungs, causing more problems.

It happens to me every so often. Crazy isn't it? Like you forget how to swallow for a minute. I just cough like a fiend for a few minutes, and it seems to get better. A little drink of water doesn't hurt either.

I stand on my head and hold my breath for 11 seconds. It dosn't help but it takes peoples attention off of my coughing.
