To be longwinded, I read a book called I Am David. David ran away from a concentration camp, living off a bite or two of bread every day for several weeks. When one day he was accepted into a house and given a proper meal, there was so much wonderful food that he couldn't eat because it would make him sick. Why is that?

His body was in a fasting stage- or starvation mode- his metabolism was working on using up his muscle mass, and whatever fat he had less for energy- his stomach shrunk from not eating and if he consumed a high calorie regular sized meal- he would most likely vomit and become ill-- just like after you have the flu- you cant just sit down and eat a steak the next day- you have to have the clear liquids and then the mushy stuff and then the good stuff

The body has "survided" for so long without, no matter that it is what the body needs, that it can't take all the nutrients all at once so quick. Many people died from concentration camps because of such and the rescuers had to learn to introduce it slowly.

that would be because the good meal produced a rush of nutrients that is larger than what your body is used to. this causes a minor system overload, and you feel sick for a bit. don't worry, though. the longer you eat well, the less this happens.
