It's never as bad as you think it will be. They are very uncomfortable afterwards, but if you are properly drugged during the surgery, you really won't care. I don't remember anything but how handsome my oral surgeon was... I had all of mine cut out, and they gave me Xanax to take before I even left for the office that morning, then they gave me more intravenously along with the anesthesia. I didn't care about anything for 8 hours. My brother had his done the same day (my mom's idea), and he doesn't remember a thing either...

I had the same procedure done when I was 14 and had all 4 wisdom teeth out. I'm not sure If they will do this to you or the extent of your surgery but I was put under anesthesia. First they give you an IV and i hate needles with a passion but it really wasn't that terrible I definitely psyched myself out for that one. The you simply go to sleep and all you can remember is waking back up, seems like you just took a catnap. Anyways after you wake up your mouth is full of cotton and swabs and you cant feel a thing because you are numb and still very tired. I got home and immediately started the vicodin and continued the anti-inflammatory meds. They help alot so you wont look like a chipmunk, you wont be able to eat solids for a while but perfect excuse to have a milkshake for every meal. Definitely ice your cheeks as much as you can it helps with swelling, bruising, and pain. When you sleep make sure you use an old pillow and pillow cover because even if you aren't a drooler you will drool because your mouth will still be numb and you're drool will be tinted red. Make sure you follow all the rules your doctor told you for cleaning procedures wouldn't want a nasty little infection in there and the faster it will heal. If you do get alot of pain gargling with luke warm salt better always makes it feel better and cleans it out. GOOD LUCK overall not a bad procedure

If the tooth is easy to come out the Dentist will give you a numbing shot, and then just pull it. You have just a heavy pulling sensation for a couple of minutes. If the tooth is impacted, then he may have to cut it out. If the procedure is going to be intense you will either be put to sleep, or given laughing gas. If you are really scared you can request gas. The only thing is, that the dental insurance sometimes will not cover gas. If so then you have to pay for it. I'm not sure how much. The last time I received gas I had to pay $30 extra. Good Luck

I have had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out. I was 18 when I had this done-about 2 years ago. I was not given "laughing gas" and knocked out for my procedure, I was only given shots in my gums to numb me, so I was fully conscious the whole time. If you have a fear of the denist I would strongly reccomend that you request they put you under. But if they can't, I can honestly tell you it won't be as bad as you think. Really the shots are the worst part of the procedure as far as pain goes (the recovery was worse than the actual procedure for me), but they do numb you alittle bit with a gel before they even do that part. It was kinda weird for me because since I was awake I could hear my tooth cracking as the denist clamped the pliars (or whatever they were) around my tooth and was yanking it out. Then when he finally got it out, I could hear the little "ping" sound my tooth made when he dropped it on the metal plate right next to me- creepy. After the procedure you'll be pretty sore and your mouth and jaw will be so swollen you'll look pretty funny. For the next couple of days, eat alot of soup-don't try to eat any real food. This sounds gross, but if you eat anything little peices of it will get stuck down in the holes in your gums when your're chewing and you'll have to rinse it out or even dig it out with a Q-tip or something. (that's what I had to do) Also, when I got home the first night the holes would not clot enough right away and I kept bleeding. If this happens, put a teabag back over the hole and gently bite down on it. Something in the tea will help it clot fatser. The denist will explain to you all about "dry socket" which is where the clot in the holes comes out and it will hurt really bad if that happens. So if you smoke, don't for at least a day because any "sucking" (like puffing on a cigarette) will rip out the clots. They will probably give you a precription pain medicene, but before you leave your house for the procedure take a couple a painkillers (like Tylenol) to ward off the pain untill you can fill your precription. I was told to not take Aspirin though because it will thin your blood and make it harder for you to clot. Trust me though, it will be over before you know it and it's something that has to done and it'll get you out of work or school for a few days anyways. It's terrible that you have to have this done right before Christmas though, but I hope this has helped you alittle bit. Good Luck!

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, I was knocked out by iv sedation. But they also numb your mouth so that when you wake up you will be in no pain. Hopefully the dentist will do both of these and also give you some pain killers to take later for when the numbness wears off. Basically after they knock you out and numb you up, they will cut a little slit in your gum line so they can remove the teeth and then sew it back up. I wish you the best of luck, I'm deathly afraid of the dentist as well, and won't even have a regular tooth pulled without being put to sleep.

1st thing never have a phobia or fear of anything...especially d dentist!! The more you are tensed.scared, or anxious the more its gonna pain.

its a very simple procedure--the dentist will give a LA(local aneasthetic) in oyur gums and cheek to block the veins innervating your gingiva, tooth, alveolar soft tissues...in order to "kill" the sensation of pain temporarily. once your numb to the pain, your tooth is extracted.
If there is impaction or bilateral growth the procedure becomes quite complicated and lengthy which may involve cutting up of gingiva or even the alveolar bone...
once oyur tooth is extracted, have painkillers and gargle your mouth with bactericidal mouth wash.
All in all ...you need to keep your self cool and calm...this is the most essential part of the treatment!!!

I'm 15 and mine hadn't come up completely but they were pushing on my other teeth so they had to come out. I had them all out. I was asleep and when I woke up my mouth was completely numb and I couldn't remember anything and I was so doped on drugs I couldn't walk. It hurts after the numbness goes away. The dentist gives you strong painkillers though. I was so scared because I had needles and to put me to sleep I had to have an IV which is a gross needle in your vein in your arm,but they gave me laughing gas before they put it in so I was calm. Your cheeks will get really big and swollen and you will look like a chipmunk. Don't suck out of a straw after the operation because it will give you dry socket. Also, remember to finish all the antibiotics the dental surgeon prescribes. I learned that the hard way and developed a painful infection and I had a bubble of stuff in near my wisdom tooth hole and it burst and white stuff leaked out the hole. It was gross. Eat soft foods after the operation and rinse the holes gently with salt water after meals. Good luck!

You will be completely asleep for the procedure. Myself, I didn't bleed much and didn't even have to take the codine they gave me afterwards. You can expect soreness and bleeding for sure the 24 hours after the procedure, but if you follow your oral surgeon's orders, everything will be minimally painful and easy. NOTE: Do NOT smoke or use straws, etc. you will get dry sockets, and THAT is where the pain comes in.
