I have compared them both and the D40 is generally a faster, newer, shrunk down version of the D50.

I prefer the D50 simply because of how it feels in my hands. The D40 is simply too small for me. Not to mention that I really feel like I need a status LCD, and the viewscreen on the D40 tries to do that too, but has a big honking light to notify you of the settings the camera is on. I dislike that because it's shining right up at me and it seems really bright.

They biggest difference is that they skimped on the auto focus features with the D40.
The D40 uses 3 AF points vs. 5 on the D50. This can make a difference for some shots, but most of the time you won't notice. And the D40 doesn't have an AF motor - it relies on the AF motor in the lens. The 'problem' with this, is that some AF lenses don't have an internal motor. The classic 50mm f/1.8 (a cheap lens for low light sitations) is one such example.

For casual photography, without a single doubt, the D40 is the right one from this list. It's not so large that it would be a burden to carry. There are very few limitations if your principle use will be as a top quality snapshooter. I won't give a long list or even my stock answer, but I will jus tbe one among what I know will be a crown of people recommending the D40 as the best choice for your stated purpose. If they tell you anything else, ignore them. Yes, the others are all "better," but not for what YOU intend to do with the camera. Haha!
