TV that has more and brighter colors, the picture is clearer, and the display of motion is better defined, and less blurry.
All this great, new, detail means you need a TV Set which can show it, and a receiver that can process the HD signal. So, this means we need new TVs, new receivers, even new cables and connector wiring.

The picture you view on a television is made up of dots called pixels. The more pixels in a picture, the sharper and more lifelike the image will look.
HDTV stands for high definition television. High definition televisions must display a picture with at least a particular number of pixels to comply with the HD standard. This number is much higher than what we're used to on regular televisions, so we associate HDTV with sharp, high-quality video.

HDTV quality is better than even DVD. So if you plan to watch only cable or free to air you do not need a HDTV. You might get the full resolution only if you plan to use as PC monitor for games.
Even the so called digital transmission might be claiming better than dvd quality but unless the original program itself was not recorded in High Definition, the good resolution of HDTV is not of any use.

Compare your computer monitor and that of a TV. The difference is clarity.. the TV is grainier and HD is clearer. TV's have 350 by 240 pixel display, computer's, ie 1024 by 768 pixels. HD has similar definition to that of a computer and a greater pallet of colors.

HDTV is basically double resolution of standard TV, plus 5.1 audio. Everyone always forgets that part. 5.1 means instead of just left and right audio,(2 ch) theres front left/right (2), rear left/right (2), center(1), and subwoofer (that's the .1 part, since it's only using 1/10 of the bandwidth for that signal)
