At least once a day, I will catch my 10 year old sister pulling a hair out of scalp. One by one, she does this until someone yells at her to stop. Why is she doing this? Is this a nervous habit? Is it her way of dealing with stress? She has pulled out enough hair to be able to tell where she is pulling it from. It is almost like she has bald spots!

It can be part of self harming. Something she does to cope with stress. I would recomend getting her help by a dr/therapist. Hair pulling can become serious, as when she feels she can't hair pull, she may self inflict by burning or cutting, or worse. It can be stress related, anxiety, depression. Best to get her to someone who can help. Yelling at her to stop wont make it go away she will only turn to things she can hide.

Stress induced habit- just like biting nails- tell your mom to take her to a doctor- she needs help, she can escalate this behavior to something more serious - like cutting herself.

It could very well be stress. I have a niece that does this also and we have to stay on her about it. I know she does it when she is stressed out and does not really know that she is doing it.
