My grandma used to say that only 3 things motivated man....money....loving....and fear and of the three fear was most powerful. It's the best mind trip around.

Not all religous groups use fear to recruit. But I would say that the reason it is used to convert members is because people are sceptical about the joy of Christ. It sounds rediculous to people that once you believe that Jesus Christ is your savior that you may (and are supposed to) cast your cares on the Lord because he cares for you. There is an overwhelming joy that comes from knowing Christ and it's difficult to sell because it sounds too good to be true. I also believe that those who are using fear to sell religion are people who do not truly know Christ and so do not know Christ's Joy. Converting members is about sharing the good news and if a person is truly "converted" their personal relationship will keep them a "member". God gave us guilt so that we would know that we've done something wrong, if we were perfect emotional black mail wouldn't work.

A long time ago, when human are not as civilized as today, they need to have some kind of shock therapy in order to get them behave. Some religions use hell and punishment from God to prevent them from doing evil deeds.
But now everything has changed, human are supposed to be far more developed, civilized and decent. However, some people don't realize this and continue to practice the old fashioned way.
Using fear as weapon, they terrorize us.
When you were small, your parents may smack your behind when you're naughty. But as you grew up, this method will no longer applicable.

Because fear is a primal reaction and one of the easiest buttons to push and manipulate.
Religions who gain people without coercion do it by offering something people really want instead of using guilt, fear or pie in the sky treasures.

Some churchs still use the fear factor, but most no longer do. If you attend a church that preaches fire & brimstone, I think it's time for a change !!!!! If a church is based on the love of God, you don't have to convert or black mail !!!!

The fear is begun early in the persons life. For many people, religion just makes sense to them. I can respect their beliefs. I just don't want their religion in my laws.
Not all religious people are stupid or bad. I choose to avoid religion because that is my choice. It does not make me more right, just different.

Fear has been effectively used by many cultures to reign in the people. Why should religions stray from a method that has shone success for ages.

I can't speak in defense of other religions. But fear is not the heart of Christianity. It is the hope and promise and joy of living forever in a state of happiness and fulfillment that draws people, not fear.
Men inject fear into religion in order to control, and it is wrong. They inject it into Christianity too, and that too is wrong.
