I hear people say that treadmill running is not as good as running outdoors. Is there a reason? Is it even true?

I actually find that true, for the most part, and for several reasons.

There are variances in the road, ups and downs, that make it a bit more challenging. Also, wind and weather can make it harder too. You can adjust a treadmill also, but for me it's just not the same.

Also, running outside is more interesting, being out there, noticing the change in seasons, all the sounds and sights. Sounds cheesy but it makes it where I like running more.

One good thing about treadmills, though, is when it's really cold or stormy out you can still run/walk. Also, they're good for post-workout cooldowns, etc. Otherwise, I run almost exclusively outside.

Running on a treadmill is way easier than running outdoors. In my opinion the treadmill does some of the work for you thus not so much exertion on your part. But again that;s my 2 cents. At least people who disagree with me are doing something healthy with their lives.

Running on a treadmill is much easier on the joints as it has more of a rebound than the hard pavement does. Some people say that a treadmill is 'easier' because the ground moves under you. I ran track and field for 6 years and didn't notice a difference between training outside vs inside, except when it was cold outside my lungs hurt, so I ran on the treadmill in the winter months. My joints don't hurt as much running on the treadmill vs running on pavement, but I didn't notice a difference in joint pain between the treadmill vs. grass/dirt. You also don't have to look out for potholes on a treadmill - I fractured my ankle because I stepped wrong in a groove in the field I was running in.

Treadmill is better unless you would be running in an area away from all pollutants, such as moderate to heavy traffic. I did not realize this until I read an article online, but people who run in the city or along busy streets are doing serious damage to their lungs. You breathe a lot more air when exercising vigorously.

I used to walk (for exercise) along a busy road to get to our canal, and after a couple of weeks of it my lungs started to hurt. Had to stop. Now, when I walk outside I go directly to a very quiet residential development and do it there. No lung pain that way.

I like running on treadmill because then it's more controlled environment. I can concentrate more not having to watch for traffic, people, etc. But I don't know why it's not as good as running outdoors.

I would have to disagree. Although I do not have one at the present time, I was kind of hoping for a new one from Santa Clause. I used my old one allot. I could watch all my favorite shows in the evening, after the kids went to bed, and exercise too! I think it's better because if you are on the street and you slow down, you may not even notice. If you are on a treadmill, if you want to slow down, you have to turn down the speed.....It makes you more aware.

Excercise wise it's about the same. Outdoors is more boring, and it could be a benefit because of the terrain change. But if you live in Florida, where mosquitos outnumber people, then you will thank the good ole treadmill!

Its true, outdoor you have to propel yourself forward which takes more work. You also get uneven ground unlike a treadmill

Running outside will help the endorphins assimilate and rid toxins...treadmill is repetitious...run outside when the weather is good and treadmill to keep the routine of cardio function when the weather doesnt permit.
