It seems to me like its associated with the KKK or something the KKK came up with. Please correct me on this.

No idea what the significance is, However, since many christian groups are from the deep south, a burning cross is a good symbol since they are a very clannish bigoted bunch of people

I have NO idea. A burning cross doesn't make any sense to me, and I'm a devoted christian.
