My wife and I recently bought an 8 week old miniature schnauzer so our 5 year old yorkie would have a friend. The yorkie is spayed but the schnauzer is not yet spayed. Our Yorkie has been in the habit of going on a pad in the house, and we are also teaching our puppy to use the pad. The mini schuauazer is pretty much housetrained by now, but our yorkie is now having problems. The (5 year old) yorkie has begun running around whichever room we are in and sprinkling urine around the floor, not localizing urine on one spot on the pad. What is the yorkie's problem and how do I get her to stop?

Your Yorkie is anxious about losing her status as top (or only) dog. She's telling the schnauzer that you and your environment are HERS. Give her plenty of reassurance that she is still #1. Certain things like always feeding her first, greeting her first when you get home, letting her go outside first, giving her a treat first, giving her a special bed or blanket that the puppy isn't allowed to use, letting her up on the bed but not the puppy, can help her to feel secure again. If necessary, use a crate and if she pees inside the house, take her outside and then into the crate for five minutes. Repeat this every time she pees inside and she should get the message that it's not acceptable behavior. Let her do a bit of growling at the puppy, especially if she's warning it away from her food, toys or treats and an occasional scuffle between them (without actual injury) is okay from time to time.

You've introduced a rival pet. Territory marking is usually reclaiming turf. If it is always where you are located, it may be the reclaiming of you. The Yorkie is asserting her alpha dominion of you.

"I think you can solve this problem in two steps. Step one, use a bacterial enzyme odor eliminator product such as Nature's Miracle to DEEPLY treat where this has been happening. Step two, the next time there is an accident there, while it is still wet (or fresh, if it's poop you've had to pick up) slosh white vinegar there deeply, to penetrate well into the carpet pad.

If you catch a spot while still wet/fresh, vinegar will work. If it dries first, then you have to go to the bacterial enzyme product. From watching my dogs and visiting dogs over the years, I think the vinegar serves as a "scent deterrent," so when you catch a spot that's fresh, do give that a try. I personally don't feel it matters whether the dog sees you perform the cleaning/treatment or not.

I think these two steps will handle the scent problem that is causing the dogs to be stimulated to do this."

i'll start simple cause i can read. since you have ALREADY spayed the yorkie and the schnauzer is too young, that issue is solved. make sure you do have the schnauzer spayed at the appropiate age though. yorkie's are difficult little creatures. is there a reason neither dog is able to go outside to potty? pads can confuse them, cause if they can potty inside there, why not other places? but the marking has nothing to do with housetraining. do not reassure the yorkie when she potty's in inappropriate places. ignore her, promptly pick her up and move her to the pad, and leave her. mainly, try taking both dogs on walks together, do not allow them to wander around and sniff things. get rid of the retractable leash, put them on a 4ft nylon and make them walk beside or behind you. i would reccomend a training class for both dogs. walk them for 2 long stretches a day and make sure they have plenty of exercise. also if you do not have a crate, i highly reccomend crate training both pets, in seperate crates. good exercise and a safe place to sleep, makes it more dificult for behavioral issues, since they are physically and intilectually happy, it's difficult for them to act out.

Look at online pet stores for a product called a BELLY BAND.

Next, get your dog de-sexed and start house training because if your 5 year old dog doesn't know where to toilet you need help learning how to train properly.

You can nueter him, but really nothing will stop a dog from peeing everywhere. My family atleast keeps my dog in the kitchen (with one of those horrible shock collars), so whe he does it, it's on a hardwood surface and easy to clean up.
