Actually, I think expressing your feelings like you did in the question would be appropriate. Here are some things that people say in such letters:
I'm sorry for your loss.
With deepest sympathy,

But, honestly, if you just write it in your words and in your voice, I think your teacher will appreciate it very much.

Depends on how close you are with the teacher/and mother. I could have wrote something from the heart but it might not be necessary under the circumstances. Keep it short and sweet (K.I.S.S.) - With deepest condolences. It's even better when you offered these words in person, and adding that you can be reached if you can be of any help at all.

You could try saying something like,"I know you must be very sad right now, and only time can cure that feeling. But when some of your grief has passed, you'll be able to remember the good times you shared with your mother. She won't really be gone as long as she is alive in your thoughts." That would be a comforting message, don't you think?

Rather then writing a letter I would suggest that u pay a personal visit and spend some time with him/her.assuringly hold his /her hand and tell him or her that u can also understand the loss and feel the pain.but life does not stop.who ever has to go has gone we feel sad but we also have to live our life for our kids, family, students.try to calm ur teacher.tell him every body is with u and remind him/her that he she is the teacher and every body looks towards the teacher and tries to emulates him/her.ur resolve and strength and how she/he takes the future challanges and face the world will inculcate same feeling in the student .so for the sake of his family ,children and students she has to be strong.do not sympathise but empathise with him. be genuine in words and believe me he/she will never forget ur contribution.

Well since you want to get in her business ask her how she died and go on from there. If she was old then it was her time to go but if it was an accident then they happend. If she was very I'll then your teacher probly new that it was coming I hope thats the case. In my opinion I think that buying her a card is not such a good I dea buy her something to chear her up instead and take her mind of her pain and suffering.

Why not just write to the head Elephant keeper, and ask if it would be possible for your daughter to get close to an elephant when you visit the zoo on the ?? of ?? this year? He or she is only human. you won't be bitten for asking. Go for it: Be brave. I hope she has a magic day.

You just want to express your sympathy. If you have never lost a parent you won't understand what your teacher is going through, but knowing that you care will mean a lot to her.

It would be better if you bought a condolence card, Hallmark has a good selection. A letter may not be the correct way.

Just to be safe, get a sympathy card with a verse already in it.
