And I get home, and try to burn on them, then I find out that apperently my computer can only burn on DVD+RW's.

What is the big difference between the - and the + sign?

I just waisted my money on the DVD-RW's didn't I?

Is there any other solution?

By the way, I have a HP pavilion a414x

The Plus and Minus signify the 2 different format of recordable dvds. For write once, you have dvd-r and dvd+r, for rewriteable you have dvd-rw and dvd+rw. You're out of luck if your dvd writer doesn't support it. Newer dvd writers support all of these formats. You can either give the disc to friends or family that have dvd burner support it or you can update your burner with one that can read/write both formats. They're not really expensive.

DVD-R (pronounced as either DVDR, DVD "Dash" R or DVD "minus" R, depending on country) is a DVD recordable format. A DVD-R has a larger storage capacity than a CD-R, typically 4.7 GB (or 4.38 GiB) instead of 700 MB, although the capacity of the original standard developed by Pioneer was 3.95 GB (3.68 GiB). Pioneer has also developed an 8.54 GB dual layer version, which appeared on the market in 2005. A DVD-R can be written to only once, whereas a DVD-RW (DVD-rewritable) can be rewritten multiple times.
A DVD+R is a writable optical disc with 4.7 GB (4.38 GiB) of storage capacity (more precisely, 2295104 sectors of 2048 bytes each). The format was developed by a coalition of corporations, known as the DVD+RW Alliance, in mid 2002. Since the DVD+R format is a competing format to the DVD-R format, which is developed by the DVD Forum, it has not been approved by the DVD Forum, which claims that the DVD+R format is not an official DVD format.

READ THE OWNER'S Manual. It says what format the PC is capable of reading/writing.

My h/p took 9 CDs to copy the HD. I keep data backups on CD and flash-drive.

If YOU need a DVD writer, take Ted B's advice.

your cd burner will only burn cd's and will only read/play dvd's not burn them i.e. (DVD ROM) sorry so yeah give/sell them to someone or fit a new dvd burner it takes about 15 minutes( a screwdriver and instructions) and costs about $30 to buy .xmas present maybe eh?
go on! you can do it!
