To help concentrate the mind on the spiritual perfections represented by the object. No one in Christianity, Hinduism, or Buddhism would say that any of the statues or icons that are used ACTUALLY contain any power in-and-of themselves. The use of the statue/icon does not assume the weakness of God; it assumes the inability of the user to focus more deeply without it.
