My bird may have broken his leg. He does not show any pain or crying and eats and still climbs inside his cage but only uses 1 leg and his beak. He is cheerful and still whistles at me but sleeps on one leg.I'm thinking he may have gotten his toenailcaught on the cage cover. Is it possible he had a stroke as when I move the leg he doesn't cry but it just hangs on his side. I don't have the money to take him to the vet. Any other ideas or suggestions?

If you don't have the money to take him to the vet, why do you have him in the first place?

You need to get him to the vet right now. most will work out payment plans with you.

If, for some reason, they won't, I suggest contacting the nearest avian rescue.

We had a cockatail growing up and he was deformed he did not have feet he only had two toes on each leg,we called him nubsey. He always would sleep on one leg, when i started going to college later to be vet assistance,I found out it can be from several different things. It could be from arthritis in the leg,it could be from his toe getting hung it may be sore depending on how long it has been since this happened.Check the toe for scrapes or cuts, then take and move it around see if he trys to bite or nibble when you do this,if he does he may have broken it. More than likely it is just sore from catching it on the cage.

If he has a broken leg don't you think he's in pain? Birds and other animals don't show pain, because of being prayed up on by other animals. If you can't take your bird to the vet then you don't need to have a bird in the first place. This may sound cruel, but it's true. I would take my last dollar to see my pets got veterinarian
care, and I have done that. Also your bird needs to have it's toenails clipped to prevent them from being caught in the cage cover.

Poor thing! He can't show any pain as this is deadly if in the wild with predators.
Bear in mind though that birds do sleep on one leg, birds perching on one leg is usually a sign of contentment and my grey does this frequently.
Listening to what you have said though, I doubt contentment is the case here. Please please please try to get him to a vet, it may not cost the earth and might just be a matter of having his toenails clipped and perhaps antibiotics. He deserves this at least. If you cannot provide the bare essential care your bird needs I suggest you look for a new owner who can.
Ensure he is warm and can reach food and water easily, it may be a good idea to pad the bottom of his cage in case he falls too. Keep a close eye on him and GET HIM SOME HELP!"

It is best to figure out a way to get him to the vet. An untreated broken leg can cause problems.

Even though he is moving about. It is painful. Lower his perches and food bowls so everything is very easy to reach. This will create less stress on his leg.
