he is not a very open guy so i don't know much about what he likes. is there anything every guy should like?

A cd or dvd would be good. Does he exercise? Get him some nike shorts. Does he go to college in a real cold area? Get him flannel lined jeans. What are his hobbies? If he likes books get him a gift certificate at borders or barnes and noble. Get him a cologne that all the girls think is hot.

That is a very good question...and still unanswered by women around the world with tons of experience with this type of thing. You could pick out an electronic gizmo. If he's an engineer: go for the misquito thing from Radio Shack. If he's a fine arts guy...maybe go for something iPod ish. If he's business or in between....I dunno. A card?
A hah! I got it. A gift certificate for food. Us college students always need food :)

If you know what kind of music he likes then it's usually a good gift to get him a CD he would like. Gift certificates are sort of boring but they can be something you can get if you're not sure.
Sports tickets or tickets to a cool music show, maybe. Or a T-shirt or sweatshirt can be ok.
Sometimes it's fun to get people something unexpected. Like if you know he's into something you could get him a magazine subscription for a year (to like Rolling Stone, or Spin magazine or other junk).
Or corny as it sounds you could make him something. Especially food is good.

My favorite cologne is Romance by Ralph Lauren. Although, Polo classic and Polo sport are good too.
If you are looking for a less expensive, but good cologne.... my other favorite is Passion for men by Elizabeth Taylor.

Chee, my sister too wants to buy deos and body sprays. Yech. T shirts too, I have many of them. I mean when I get her a present, I get a nice Dido CD or maybe pearl earrings, Love in the Time of Cholera.
She is nice but I think like all girls lacks imagination.
Try to think what you would like to buy for youself and then buy it for him. Not a thong or something though.

Let's see when I was in collage.... I would of liked....
One of those giant beer mugs, Movie passes or dinner certificates (for two), a small tool kit, or most any kind of personal electronic device (ipod, min fridge, etc)
Sports and hobby equipment if you can find out what he does in his free time. (try asking him... "so what did you do this weekend, last summer whatever)

Well, if you have good taste in clothes, something that actually looks good on me. My cousin is wiz at choosing that kind of stuff.
Anything that is classified as a gadget I don't have.

You can't go wrong with casual clothes like sports tee shirts, sweatpants, tennis shoes, etc.
