she ask if I had any miracle answers. I remember some thing about a medicine other than a pain medication, but not the name. Does anyone have any ideas? Alternative medicine and things that have worked for you would also be appreiciated as she is terribly depressed by this and we live across country so I can not visit.

I guess I did not explain myself very well, she states that she has been to the docters and all the medication she has been given has not helped. Isn't two months a long time? When I had them, they only lasted for 3-4 months.

Look up post-herpetic neuralgia.

This type of pain is different than muscle pain. It is called neuropathic pain. Meds like gabapentin target this type of pain. There are some new meds on the market that specifically target this type of pain as well. Have him go to the doctor.

Edit: Then go to a different doctor. Even if you get the name of a drug here you can't get it without going to a doctor. If she is still having pain, try a neurologist or a pain specialist. And no, its not unusual for the pain to last that long. If all conservative measures fail, there is a procedure that essentially kills the sensory nerves in that area that supply the pain - usually done by a neurologist after conservative treatment fails.

Tell her to try to induce a trance state by repeating simple prayers over and over, if she has a religion. It's not a bad thing to do when one is in pain anyway.

If she's not religious, she could try meditating by thinking the word "one" over and over again; has the same effect.

Shingles is awfully painful, but it will pass. I assume she's under a doctor's care, because you mention she has meds. Of course, she should seek the doctor's advice first and foremost.

Shingles is a very painful disease - it is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. It typically sets up along a nerve and thus causes a great deal of pain.

There are many good medications on the market today that can help alleviate that pain. If your friend is not getting the relief he/she needs, they need to call their doctor back and get him/her to prescribe another med.

That's not good. If you are male/female and you are not sexually active, it could be anything from a kidney infection to a kidney stone(s). Both medical problems usually present with painful urination and severe back pain that worsens over time. If you are sexually active, it is possible you could have some sort of STD. Either problem requires a doctor visit. If the pain continues to increase, I would most definitely recommend going to the emergency room ASAP. Good Luck*

Shingles are VERY painful but thankfully don't last very long.

A doctor should be able to give her some relief from the pain. She should go back to the doctor, IF she went to one, and if he won't give her some relief, she should go to another one that will. Good luck to her. Pops
