In the painting, three Roman men are holding out their swords in a stance of allegiance to, I believe, an elder man. Women in the background are seen in despair. I don't know why I can't remember the painting's name. I don't know what period it is from, but I am assuming it is the Renaissance, and most likely it is Italian. Thanks.

This painting is a Neoclassical work by the artist Jaques Louis David and it's called The Oath of The Horatii. It hangs in The Louvre, Paris.

David believed that Art must have a social mission (appeal to the beholder's moral sense instead of merely giving him pleasure). "Art must contribute forcefully to the education of the public."

In his Oath of the Horatii, his message to the people of Paris was eminently clear, for here the sons pledge to return victorious or on their shields (dead)... and the lesson was not lost on the those who supported the revolution.

incorrect inspite of many Gods because the Egyptians or Romans had the killing went on. both were the properly acceptable Civilisations of there time. both were violent cases too. they did not strive against over which God develop into perfect they fought or killed for all of them! What attempt to be asking is why 3 diverse Religions who believe contained in the exact same God,< Jew Christian Muslim> are all killing one yet another in HIS call? God AllA JHVH are the same being!

Jaques louis david was a french painter, a part of the Neo-classical movement. Neo-classicism emulates the classical style of of the renaissance.
