I don't use Q-tips because I believe they just jam the wax in further. I have used a bobby pin or paper clip though. If you are careful it really isn't dangerous. If you have hard wax there are some wax softening drops you can put in your ear that really help.

the cotton can come off the q-tip or the little plastic things on the end of bobby pins could come off and get stuck in your ear. But I doubt that the whole pin or q-tip could get stuck.

It's impossible to lose a bobby pin or a Q-tip in your ear.
It is possible, however, to damage the delicate tissue inside your ear, or even hurt your eardrum.
Everybody says you shouldn't stick things in your ears, but I still use Q-tips, but I don't jam them into my ear, either.
Just be careful not to stick anything in your ear so far that it hurts. If it does, pull it back out. :)

Never stick anyhting end your ear that's sharper than your elbow. That's what I learned in school. Q-tips only can be used around the ear not in the hole. They helps the ear wax build up inside the ear. Never stick it in the ear.

If your ear is as deep as the English Channel and as wide--- that's an old wives tale-- you can however, puncture your eardrum and that is why it is recommended that you do not shove either object deep into your ear.

I can't imagine that happening if you are not deliberately shoving it in your ear. But it could, in more ways than one. I'm being literal so don't be bothered.
