I was a soldier in the Army and I took a life in defense of another. The bible makes it clear that murder (the cold blooded taking of a human life) IS a sin (or evil). In defense of your own life or the life of another is not a sin. The Israelites were often sent to battle the original occupants of The Holy Land. I would venture to say that to take the life in the defense of another (even someone who wasn't a "loved one") would not be a sin.

Humanity have been set apart for several millenia, and we need so much effort and so much education to realize this fact, and more learning is required to build a real family of human beings throughout this planet. And this civilized family even have the duty to prepare themselves to lovingly meet other human families in the other worlds. If we see how we have advanced from tribal family, we can realize that this global unity is not imagination or utopia.

There is no temptation that has overcome you, except that which is COMMON to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
