The dentist wants me to have that root canal, the pain has already gone with some pain medication, and it's been 5 days no pain any more. Should I listen to him in this case, or may be he thinks I have insurance and I can afford that root canal.

hi , it depends at that pain , when it happened and how long it continued ,
if your pain continued for more than one minute , so you need root canal treatment .
at the first stage even in an x-ray you will not find any abscess ,
abcess starts when infection goes beyond the root apex.

I don't think any "one" tooth is worth that much. Let's get real here, a thousand dollars for a root canal! For one tooth! I mean, can they guarentee that that tooth is going to be in your mouth untill you die for that much money! NO! They will not. Well, that is just my opinion, it's up to you. It's your mouth and money.

Only a dentist can comment on this. Let us not make a judgement just by reading one question. If you are not happy with your dentist, try going to another and take a second opinion.
