My roommate's puppy keeps heaving like she's going to throw up and looks really uncomfortable.

About 30 minutes ago, she was fine and very active... Then we took her outside and she started acting really strange and it seemed like she was going to throw up, but she never did.

She seems to be breathing very heavily and keeps laying down and then moving a few inches this way or that as if shes in pain and then laying back down.

I called the emergency pet number and they basically told me to watch for constant vomitting and bring her in if she gets worse or doesn't get better by tomorrow.

Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Ok it depends if shes sick or not I have to yorkshire terriers and 1 of them used to have the same problem but to get over you go to the vet and you get some medicine thats not the only thing you do you have to give it lots of attention and comfort I think she has the symptoms of a regular human though humans get sick like but I wouldn't worry too much if you need more help or something contact me. Thanks!

If your puppy is below the age of 1 I am concerned that I realize what it has, it's this sickness that Starts to devour the within of your puppy and makes your puppy have diarrhea, now not hungry, and really inactive due to the fact that of agony it's going by way of, I realize this due to the fact that i purchased 2 nine-week dogs, then they bought it, I had no inspiration and that i bought to the vet too past due and so they each died correct earlier than my eyes, I might that puppy to a vet ASAP due to the fact that if you do not that puppy will die of terrible agony and discomfort, HELP IT! DO NOT LET IT DIE, GET IT TO A VET ASAP!

Has your mates puppy been wormed? In puppies, parasites are the most likely cause of vomiting. There could also be a gastrointestinal problem if it has already been dewormed. This can result from food. I hope the puppy is ok. Your best option would be to get the pup vetchecked as soon as you can. In the mean time try and keep it warm and comfortable.

Hopefully she won't get worse. She could have gotten something outside or even inside that doesn't agree with her and could even be toxic. Are there any frogs in your yard?
Puppies will often eat or chew on anything that their noses come across. Are there any toxic plants in the yard? Indoors?
There are so many possibilities. I hope her discomfort passes, but even if she doesn't vomit constantly, if she still seems to be in pain, take her in to your Vet tomorrow and get her checked.
I would also contact the emergency people again if she continues with the heavy breathing and moving with pain, if it continues or worsens. Please update us, maybe with a question in the form of "ER Puppy?" or something like that. Hope she will be okay.

Yes--this sounds very suspiciously like bloat! This is exactly what happens in bloat--the dog tries to vomit but can't, the stomach is vastly expanded with air and likely food/water--the stomach may then literally twist upon itself, what is called gastric dilitation volvulus, or GDV, more commonly known as 'bloat'. (Bloat can also occur without that twisting of the stomach).
Regardless, this is an EMERGENCY! If the stomach has rotated, it will result in death if not treated immediately. Even with immediate surgery, some bloat cases will not survive. But give the dog the best chance you can!

Get her to the closest veterinary ER NOW!

No offense to you because you did the right thing by calling the ER vet, but what a stupid answer they gave you. If the dog is heaving & nothing is coming up, she may have a blockage. Large dogs can get a condition where the intestines get twisted & unless emergency surgery is performed very soon, the dog will die. I don't mean to scare you, but the ER vet doesn't know "sit" from "sh**". Find a reputable vet SOON.

Please, call another animal hospital right away for a second opinion. It doesn't have to be affiliated with your vet. Your puppy could have eaten something (puppy's are like that) and it could be blocking her or making her stomach uncomfortable. Check for bloating in her tummy - i.e. it looks really, really big - that means something is in there.

She may need to "pass it out" (i.e. poop it out) or throw it up, whatever the case may be.

We have a 7 month old puppy who ate part of our bathroom rug, while I was taking a shower, no less! And it was very similar.

Watch her very, very closely. Good for you for calling the emergency number. And be ready for a long night. Good luck!

Has she pooped recently? It could be a bowel impaction, or some sort of poisoning, or she may have a condition called "bloat" which means the gut fills up with liquid or air and stretches too far. BLOAT CAN BE FATAL as it can cause her intestines to twist ("torsion"), cutting off the circulation to her gut and the bowel tissue will die. Take her to the emergency vet and have her examined ASAP before it's too late.

Open her mouth and look down her throat to see if anything is caught in her throat. Also lift up her tongue to see if anything has become entangled on it. Check her body over to make sure that there aren't any bite marks or scratches from something poisonous. Check outside to see if there's anything she could have gotten into. Was there rat poison, antifreeze, or any other substance that you find? If so then go to the vet now.
