I think you'll arrive at an answer if you do what SL suggested, who, by the way, is the only person so far who has given you an answer that is remotely realistic. All the rest are a bunch of shallow sentimentalisms.

What a joke, someone gave SL a thumbs down because she didn't give a touchy-feely answer (and I'm sure I'll get the same).

Your question has been asked a millions times. Go read some good philosophy books for your answer, you'll never find here.

This is properly a philosophy question, not a dating question. Moreover, it is an open question--a question whose answer do not admit of one single true account. The question of what is love is a prennial question that has engaged mankind for thousands of years. Philosophers, theologians, and more recently, psychologists have all tried their hands at providing an adequate account. To answer such a question requires a significant amount of serious study, beginning as far back, at least, to the texts of ancient Greek writers, inculding Homer, the dramatists, Plato and Aristotle, as well as the Epicureans and Stoics. But you'll also have to address the ancient traditions of China and India, among others. And that's just a start. The sort of "Love is X" answer you'll get on here are all off-the-cuff responses to a question that deserves far more erudition than a quick opinion. You don't want "working" definitions , but accounts that demonstrate the real essence (if it has one) of love.

And the answers you've been given, including this one, are not that type.
