If your dog is a small dog, get him to a VET asap. Within a few hrs he could start getting very ill, possible vomiting, diarhhea, shaking, panting, being hyper and after that he could start having muscle spasms, twitching, be very ill then possible coma and even death.
If the dog is big or small and it is DARK chocolate or BAKER's chocolate it is very serious.
I had a German Shepherd Dog that ate a whole bag of chocolates, those miniature bars, foil and all. She was okay but I checked with the Vet as soon as it happened. She did not need treatment and had no real symptoms of having eaten it. The Vet said that had it been BAKER'S CHOCOLATE he would have been concerned. or if she was a small dog.
A small dog we know ate a number of dark chocolate candies at Christmas and died from it. So yes it can kill. WEIGHT, SIZE OF DOG, TYPE OF CHOCOLATE and AMOUNT are all things your VET should know. CALL now.

I think you have all the answers you need but I will add my 2 cents. I have a miniature Dachshund dog and last year she ate a whole candy bar (milk chocolate) She did have the poops for a day or 2 and it got messy but she was OK. Just keep an eye on your dog. I think it will be OK. Good Luck.

No, he won't die. But he'll probably be crapping quite a bit in the next day or two.
We had a dog eat an entire tub of butter, and it didn't do any permanent damage. However, he wasn't the happiest dog for a couple of days.

yes, a dog can die from chocolate.
Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs.

yes they can die. some are not bothered at all. up to you to take a chance. give the dog liquid hydrogen peroxide and that will make him vomit up the chocolate and then take him to your vet first thing in the morning to be checked over. seriously, do this. also after your dog vomits and his stomach has setteled down give him some activated charcoal, you can find this in most drugstores, you might have to ask at the counter, the activated charcoal can absorb toxins produced from the chocolate

it is a common misconception that chocolate is like rat poison to dogs however it is just as deadly to humans. it goes by how many miligrams of chocolate the dog has eaten. for example a 50 pound dog would have to eat around 8pounds of chocolate for it to cause health problems! how much does your dog weigh? if anything just keep your eye on him i would be more nervous whether he is allergic to it or not. it isn't an emergency at all many of the people responding to the post are basing their answers on what they have heard from other people

Depends on what kind of chocolate it is. If it's really dark chocolate, keep a close eye on him. If it's milk chocolate, chances are he'll be fine. I had a dog eat an entire box of "turtles" from under the tree. He had the poops, but no lasting effects.
Here are some guidelines -
Knowing which chocolate is the most toxic is important, but leaves one wondering how much must be eaten to poison a dog. The list in this box should be helpful. Maybe you can clip it and post it on your refrigerator?
White chocolate: 200 ounces per pound of body weight. It takes 250 pounds of white chocolate to cause signs of poisoning in a 20-pound dog, 125 pounds for a 10-pound dog.
Milk chocolate: 1 ounce per pound of body weight. Approximately one pound of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 20-pound dog; one-half pound for a 10-pound dog. The average chocolate bar contains 2 to 3 ounces of milk chocolate. It would take 2-3 candy bars to poison a 10 pound dog. Semi-sweet chocolate has a similar toxic level.
Sweet cocoa: 0.3 ounces per pound of body weight. One-third of a pound of sweet cocoa is toxic to a 20-pound dog; 1/6 pound for a 10-pound dog.
Baking chocolate: 0.1 ounce per pound body weight. Two one-ounce squares of bakers' chocolate is toxic to a 20-pound dog; one ounce for a 10-pound dog.

How big is he? If he is a fairly large dog, I think he'll be ok. Our 90 lb. Golden Retriever had eaten a chocolate bar before and was fine.
