For the past few years Christmas gift-giving with my hubby's side of the family has seemed really difficult. I'm looking for new ideas! There's his Mom/Dad, his Sister/Her Hubby/2 Boys and our family of Me/Hubby/2 Kids. Everyones on a tight budget. We're not very close so we never know what to buy eachother. And drawing names from a hat seems silly cause we're such a small family. Any suggestions?

Instead of giving each individual a gift, give something for the whole family, like a board game. movies, or restaurant gift card.

My family went through the same thing. I am not close at all to my brother and his wife, and only see them that one day for Christmas. Finding them a gift was ridiculous because it was so hard, and asking for a gift list seemed really cruddy.

We ended up just buying for the kids, since Christmas is really for them anyway. This way we're able to spend more $ on a nice couple of gifts and get them something they really enjoy instead of clothes and socks, which is the usual limit our budget allowed.

This may work out well for you since there's an even number of 2 children each, so neither family would feel that they're giving more gifts than they're getting.

Best of luck and Merry Christmas!

Grandma - not sure what a "typical grandma" is so I guess some nice face cream or a scarf cos old poeple need to keep warm Grandad - You coudl get him a book of quotes and syaings (I did this once)..although on second thoughts i'm not sure it was special enough - so some driving gloves, a scarf or a song book? You can probably get these things in a discount store - in fact nowadays you can probably get most things in a discount store Brother - a gaming guide/ or "cheats" book Sister - I can't think - what about hair accessories as she cares for her appearnce or makeup Tools not actual makeup! Aunt - You could get her a book on how to make chocolate/sweets or smoothy/ice cream/chocolate/sweets recipee book - she might fancy a change! This is all I can think of apart from ice cream/smoothie maker which can be expensive! Mom - All I can think of is something different to make. If she likes making things maybe she'd enjoy paint by number/knitting kits where you knit little people/animals with different themes or a friendship bracelet making kit? Dad - Can't think - a sporty scarf/t-shirt, or a book about the history of his chosen sport or it could even be an autobiogrraphy by a favourite or famous sportsman, o and the olympic games game are coming out on most consoles! Makeup sounds good for friends - but my suggestion is you give them their favourite colours OR you could research what colours suit their colouring and leave a message on the tag explaining this... I mean like "PS I found out these colours really suit you" Ok hope I can be of help and good luck!!

When I buy on a tight budget I buy my son and his wife a gift certificate to a good restauraunt and offer to babysit whenever they want to use it, and then I get the kids a gift each. Gift certificates are good because you can give it to the whole family as a gift. Also I decide that I am only going to spend about less than fifty dollars on each person if I decide to buy individually. Each year I have to be more creative in selecting gifts, and more budget minded as my family grows.

if everyone's on a tight budget draw names. It's not silly just because you have a small family. It will help everyone to relax and perhaps spend a little more if they only have to buy for one family. Our family has been doing this for years and it's really fun and makes xmas so much less stressful.

Get everyone to make out a list of gifts that are a certain value. Put everyone's name on each and draw them from a hat. That way, whatever you get or give as a present is wanted.

try a chineese gift giving game, where everyone brings a gift, no names on it, (you can do it 2 times one for kids and one for adults) everyone pulls a number, thats the order you go in to pick a gift from the pile, once everyone goes the person who went first gets to trade with someone anyone he or she likes. it really fun and everyone only buys a gift set at the price u pick.

I think you should make them something. Labor is much cheaper than store bought items.
