Jeffries was like the other champions who had come before him. Sullivan, Corbett, and Fitzsimmons were all opposed to fighting any one of color as champions. Corbett had a fight with Peter Jackson (a colored fighter from Australia) that ended in a draw before he was champ. Sullivan and Corbett both avoided Jackson like the plague as champs. Jeffries even retired as champ stating that he had beaten everyone he could possibly beat. The only problem was Sam Langford and Jack Johnson were fighters he had not faced. He had set the color line too. When Johnson beat Tommy Burns (the champ at the time) then Jeffries was forced out of retirement to beat Johnson. The problem was he was past his prime when he fought Johnson. He was beat, and beat bad. Was he racist? In looking at the history of of the times and boxing, he was just the image of what society was then.

jeffries was an out and out racist........end of story, no excuses because many white folk further north were more tolerant towards black people, and rightly so.. so not everyone at that time were racist...i also would go one further and say jack johnson would have outclassed him even in jeffries prime, lets not forget poor sam langford, another great fighter who would also have wupped jeffries butt

OF COURSE HE WAS AND TO AMERICA'S SHAME RACISM IS STILL AROUND.

AMERICA WAS BUILT ON SLAVERY - IN THE CONSTITUTION BLACK PEOPLE WERE CONSIDERED 3/5TH OF A PERSON.

FREE SLAVE LABOR ENABLED THE SOUTH TO BECOME PROSPEROUS AND BUY FROM THE SUPPLIES FROM THE NORTH. THAT CREATED THE WEALTH OF AMERICA.

BLACKS WERE BANNED FROM MLB UNTIL 1947.

SOUTHERN WHITES LEFT THE DEMOS OVER INTEGRATION.

TO THIS DAY YOU STILL HAVE RACIST COMMENTS AND STATEMENTS ON YAHOO ANSWERS ALL THE TIME.

P. S. I BET YOU THAT SOMEONE WILL SAY JEFFRIES WAS JUST A PRODUCT OF HIS TIMES.
