I saw this in an answer to a previous question. Is it a joke or something?

I'm really asking, not trying to make fun of anyone.

No, it isn't a joke. In Scotland, Christmas is a very low-key event, celebrated as a religious observance. The real holiday is Hogmanay which is the equivalent, more or less, to New Year's Eve.

feasible say Merry Christmas to each person that you recognize celebrates it. yet imagine about it for a 2d: how may you experience if somebody else assumed that you had the same beliefs they did, and needed you the "incorrect" holiday? What if all of us you encountered in December needed you a contented Hannukah? imagine it for a second. does no longer it get on your nerves that all of us develop into assuming your beliefs were the same as theirs, and did not even evaluate that you may celebrate Christmas instead of Hanukkah? perchance the first few cases it does no longer worry you, and also you may merely take their properly-desires contained in the spirit in which they were meant, yet do not you imagine it may commence to get to you ultimately? many human beings don't like it at the same time as others make faulty assumptions about them -- extraordinarily at the same time as the human beings doing the assuming are a large and vocal majority that many times neglects or disregards the lifestyles and rights of non secular minorities.
