Sounds like a couple of things...but the most obvious to me is the small intestine's bacterial overgrowth prematurely fermenting food. The most common cause of bad breath is the poor digestion of food. This results in undigested food being fermented in the intestines. The odor is capable of escaping back up through the mouth from the intestinal tract....or it can cause an uncomfortable bloating in the abdominal region and lead to flatulence.
Some other causes: Acid Reflux Disease, ulcers, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn's Disease, even Diabetes. Advise the gentleman to have a G.I. series performed if he hasn't already.
I've heard of people using baking soda and water as a home remedy when the cramps and foul-smelling gas explusion begins.
Best of luck - that's has got to be a real pain to experience and to be around.

Bad indigestion can cause the stomach acids to come up and cause a foul odor. The best bet is to see a gastroenterologist. He will give a thorough check-up to see nothing more serious is causing the problem. He would recommend a diet that helps eliminate the belching and acid reflux. If the burps are a compulsive disorder he may need to see a therapist.

I have a friend who this happens to about once every 3 months. She'll be burping up the worst rotten egg smell every 10 minutes for a couple of days, and then it just stops. It's the wierdest thing. Except she doesn't pass gas on the other end with that same offensive odor, she only burps it up. She doesn't complain of any ill feeling in her tummy, and she has never went to check it out, probrably because it doesn't last very long. It's quite disturbing if you think about it, because not only does she have to constantly smell it, but she said it tastes just as foul as it smells. I hope you find a cure to this dilema.Good Luck.

Ehm..
I'm a medical researcher. It is widely agreed among physicians and medical paraprofessionals, that initial diagnosis, mostly by using a typical acid reflux symptoms questionnaire, is necessary to ensure the most effective and quick treatment for this condition. Approx 70% of the acid reflux diagnostics that are based on the presence of typical symptoms are accurate. Since acid reflux, also called GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), can cause patients a great deal of discomfort and result in severe complications, it is highly important to know how to identify its symptoms in order to quickly diagnose and treat it.
If you know you have acid reflux you can try this natural program http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=568
I hope it helps

Not eating along with a gassy stomach can make it happen, eat healthy. It also may be a little acid reflux, if it continues I would see a Doctor if you still feel like it's something serious.
