In the case of contemporary art, maybe there is something specific they are trying to convey and cannot do it with the limits of most contemporary works. Maybe lack of ambition and creativity? I never never use words in any of my work except for a small signature at the bottom of the painting.

I think contemporary art allow us to use any element to build it; words and phrases helps communication; for some artist is important "to say:" something (for others is just important to DO the art, anyway it is saying something...)

Curiously in India calligraphy and literature are so important that they do poetry in canvas and consider calligraphy as a fine art.

Western artist "discover" the power of a written language ina avisula art in the second half of XX century with the "conceptualism".

Perhaps it's because the artist is uncertain whether his or her art will communite without the addition of words.

Because people think that because it is on a canvas it is more important than if it were on notebook paper.
