What you have done looks OK to me. Perhaps you could have used "replied Kelly" and "Kelly answered".

In general writing it would have been presumed that the character speaking changes when the "speech marks" are closed & then re-opened.

John said, "I don't feel well today. I am staying home."
I don't believe you," said Kelly, "because you said the same thing last week."
"You're right. I'll go to class tomorrow."
"I hope you go, I know you want to do well."

Ok. The examples you have given are instances of Direct Speech, e.g.: She asked, "what is reported speech?"

Reported speech is: I heard her ask a question about what Reported Speech is.

Put simply, if it's in speech marks, it's Direct Speech; if it's not, it's Reported Speech.
