In 1965, the assistant football coach at the University of Florida met with physicians to study why players were being affected by heat-related illnesses. The physicians found two things that were causing this, the fluids and electrolytes lost. They formulated Gatorade as a perfectly balanced electrolyte-carbohydrate drink. Gatorade is named after the mascot of the University of Florida, the Gators.

Funny thing is that the FSU gators coach that made gatorade analysed sweat for electrolytes, added sugars for energy and added flavor. Gatorade spent many years and lots o money on research and found that the formula was pretty much right.

Gatorade is a non-carbonated sports drink marketed by Quaker Oats Company, a division of PepsiCo. Originally made for athletes (the drink was created by researchers at the University of Florida and named for the school mascot), it is now often consumed as a snack beverage. The drink is intended to rehydrate and to replenish the carbohydrates (in the form of sugars sucrose and glucose) and electrolytes (sodium and potassium salts) depleted during aerobic exercise, especially in warmer climates.

Many years ago, a football player at the University of Florida wanted to find a elixir to give him an energy boost to make him stand out to coaches, so he heard about the magical powers of alligator meat. He decided to puree that and then mix with different citrus fruit plentiful in Florida til he found a flavor he liked. Others who tried it were turned off by the gator meat ... no just kidding, the real story follows:
In the summer of 1965, an assistant coach at the University of Florida set down with a team of university physicians to try to determine the cause of problems by heat and heat related illnesses to his players. The rest follow at the site shown.

It was created in the '60's as a energizing drink for the Florida Gator's football team. They found that the athletes were refreshed sooner with this than with plain water.

The Florida Gators (college football team) were playing very poorly. So the people in the college's science department helped the athletic department by invinting this dricnk that would "aid" the "Gators", hence: "Gatoraid".
