I work in an orthodontic office, and I also have had braces myself. It's OK to be nervous. Knowing what to expect might help, though. The removal is much easier than when the braces went on. First, the orthodontist uses a tool that is kind of like nail clippers to snip the hardened glob of glue that holds the bracket to the tooth. It will make a "snap" or a "crack" sound, but it won't hurt you or your teeth at all. It just breaks the glue that held the bracket onto the tooth. Every bracket will have to be removed like that. Then, if there is any glue remaining on the teeth, it will need to be polished off. They will use a tool that has a head that spins. That tool will make a high-pitched noise that sounds like a drill. Some people are afraid of that noise because they think that the orthodontist or the assistant is going to drill their teeth, but that is not what is going to happen. The tool actually is more like a buffer, and will rub the glue off. After your braces are off, you will need to wear retainers to make sure your teeth don't move back to where they were before you had braces. The orthodontist needs to take an impression of your mouth to make the retainer. You are right, that is not a very nice experience, with that gooey stuff you have to bite into. But try to think of something that makes you happy to distract you from thinking about it; or try to count backwards from 100 in your head. It sounds lame, but it really does help. When it's all over, you'll have your new smile and you'll be glad you had braces. Remember that you must wear your retainers! Your teeth will shift, and you might have to get braces again to fix them. I promise that even though it won't be fun, it won't be painful either. As for gagging, almost everyone gags. That's OK, too. Try the counting backwards thing and you'll be OK. Good Luck, and congratulations on completing your ortho treatment.

Oh my. I'm sure you feel nervous. Everyone would feel nervous. But to tell you the truth there's nothing to worry about. Your teeth will be beautiful and straight. If someone talks about your teeth they're completly crazy. What is there to say about a beautiful smile? Good luck and happy holidays sweetie.

I was so happy to get my braces off!!
I gag alot also, and my ortho taught me a trick to alternate lifting your legs in the air slowly, it re focuses where your mid is at so you can forget about the nasty goo sliding down your throat.
Taking off braces hurt me just a little bit, because i'm sensitive, but overall it wasnt bad.
Be happy!!! No more brace face!

Remember that it is important for you to wear your retainer at night after the braces come off..to insure that your teeth do not begin shifting back to the way they were before you got braces.

Dont be nervous. It is not like going to the dentist. The only problem will be eating the first day or two. You will need to eat soft food or soups. After then no more sore mouth. Getting them off is not painful and you will feel great.

ewww, i hate impressions. they're not that bad, my orthodontist was just a total dick and decided to play around with my gag reflex using his mirror thing, just to show his students. getting ur braces off doesn't hurt, there might be a little pressure, then, for me, they removed the glue left using a drill-y thing, it doesn't hurt, it just smells bad. then they shaped and shined my teeth, i sorta felt lke i was in a car wash :), anyway, non of it hurts, at all, its just smells funny because of the glue, and ur mouth might get tired from holding it open for so long... good luck :)

removing braces feels sooooo good because you haven't felt the front of your teeth for years.....it feels so different and great! i didn't like my teeth for the first few days after i got my braces off because i wasn't used to them so beware that you may feel the same and need to adjust to them.....but then I ended up loving them and still love them.....they are wonderful!
