Penicillins are typically good for infections caused by gram positive bacteria typically stuff involving skin organisms such as strep or staph. However, in this day and age of resistance this is becoming less common as the bacteria can be resistant. It is still good for group A strep that causes strep throat, as well as syphillis.

Penicillin is the first antibiotic discovered. Because of overuse in the early years many bacteria are now resistant to it and many people are allergic to it. It is still an effective antibiotic against some bacteria.
