I have my nephew, he is two. He does not talk - at all. He only grunts and points for everything. He seems to understand what I am saying to him, but he does not communicate in any way except pointing and grunting.

Should I be concerned?

Where can I find more info about this?

I wouldn't be concerned, because he points and also he grunts at the right time. There are therapists who will help move him along if you want. It won't hurt him any, but really it's probably that you're able to figure out what he wants so he hasn't felt the need to form words yet. You'd really want the therapist if he gets to where he's frustrated because he can't find the right words. But usually they just go ahead and start talking.

I have an adult child with autism and he wouldn't point or grunt. I seriously doubt autism is a factor here.

I assume that if you have a nephew, you are in some way realted to his parents. I am not a doctor, but I bet your relatives have one for your nephew. Kids learn to talk at diffent ages. Boys tend to talk later than girls. Sometimes a child who says nothing all of a sudden starts spewing out words. I wouldn't worry too much, but children who don't verbalize early become easily frustrated. You could help your nephew by learning a little about baby sign language, which often help a child who is not yet verbal communicate better. Be extra patient with you newphew and try to calm him if he acts out or is frustrated rather than punishing him.

Yes, you should be concerned. I have the same issues with my 2 year old. First I had her ears checked, and she was fine. Then I contaced the early start program in my neighborhood and they came out to evaluate her. She qualified for free speech therapy once a week. Now that she's in therapy, she's doing much better and she's adding new words every day. Contact the early start program in your area, contact your local school district to get the number. They see kids ages 0-3. It's better to be safe than sorry. 2 year olds get very frustrated when they can't get their point across. The sooner you can help them do that, the better.

Children develop differently. I wouldn't worry too much if he follows directions when you tell him to do something. If he is understanding you, then he probably does not have a hearing problem though it wouldn't hurt to check with a doctor. I know of lots of children who didn't start talking until closer to 3 years old. Then, whew... they talked up a storm. Here's a good link to follow and read up on what you should do to help your nephew talk: http://kidshealth.org/parent/growth/communication/c12yr.html

If you are concerned I would talk to his parents about maybe talking to the Dr. about this. I have a 2 1/2 yr old grandson and he was not talking at first he would whine and point I told my daughter she had to make him say what he wanted and we talked to the Dr and he said why should he talk if you jump and give him what he wants. He knew he did not have to talk just whine and point. Kids that age are very smart they know what they are doing. If you know he can hear you I would not be to concerned. Good luck

Not really, every child learns at a different pace. If he is not talking by 3 their may be a problem. If you just have a feeling something is not right it couldn't hurt to take him to a doctor. Being 2 he should have a wellnes check-up with his ped. and then would be a good time to talk to the doctor about it. Good luck!

My daughter is having the same problem. We are scheduled for an advanced hearing test next week. Why don't you take your nephew to the doctor's too?

Have him tested. My sons were like that, and they were almost deaf. There could be other causes as well. If people are really working with him, he should have a small vocabulary by now. See if you have an AEA in your area ( Area Education Association). They can test and evaluate him. They can also recommend Dr's to see.
