He's a regular there....and i've waited on him since day one.
My response to him was "No it isn't. Its a girls name." Was my response correct? or how was i suppose to response to him?

i mean yeah, i know it goes either way, but its just the way he said "Isn't Jamie a boy's name" kinda cut me down. I have a cousin also named Jamie, and my cousin is a girl too.

I would have said "Why do you want to know?"
That is what I always say when I don't want to answer a question or I can't think of an answer I want to give. Plus, a lot of people use that in their careers as well, with co-workers, customers, etc.
It could have been an innocent question, he was trying to think of something to stay to start a conversation, and asked you a dumb question, or he was rude and wanted to irritate you?
"Why do you want to know" Would also give a "fair" chance to explain if their question came out wrong...and boy have I had my share of questions I botched! :(

Your response was fine. Noone has to be polite when someone has offended them. It is both a girls and boys name, so dont worry about it. I know both a boy and a girl called Jamie. Other than that guy, I think most people know it can be either. My sister had it hard growing up too - Her name is Casie and everyone always told her it was a boys name too (even tho I have never met a boy with that spelling - usually its Casey).

Well, it's for boys and girls. So you could say something like "It can be used for boys and girls, kind of like Aaron/Erin (and you can insert more unisex names here)." I don't know where you work, but if it's a restaurant and he was drinking, he may have been just feeling obnoxious. Or flirting. Just keep your cool. Unless he's truly curious about the origin of the name Jamie, he's probably just trying to get a reaction.
From thinkbabynames.com
The boy's and girl's name Jamie is pronounced JAY-mee. It is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "he who supplants." Originally a pet form of James, now also used as a feminine form of James. Actresses Jamie Lee Curtis, Jami Gertz.
Jamie is a very popular female first name, ranking 146 out of 4275 for females of all ages in the 1990 U.S. Census. Jamie is a rather uncommon surname, ranking 63085 out of 88799 for people of all ages in the 1990 U.S. Census.

It is both. Jamie is the female version of James, but men named James are sometimes called Jamie as little boys and they grow up with that name.

Customers are ignorant.
Jamie can be a name for either a boy or a girl. My name was originally a boy's name, especially in the south, but lots of girls are now being named this, too. (Not tellin' what it is... ;)
Just be glad that this guy could read your nametag. Most people read my name wrong, and no, it's not hard to pronounce. It's six freaking letters!!! Heh. Sorry.
And, yeah, customers are ignorant.

Jamie works for either a boy or a girl. You were right in correcting him though. His nose was in the wrong place!

Jamie is a girls name as well as a boys name. As well as other names such as Kim, Lyndsey, Carroll or Carol, Lauren, Marion. I think the customer was way out of line. Or perhaps so ignorant he/she does not know any better. I would not allow it to bother me. Your mother named you Jamie because she obviously liked the name.God bless****

It's both. I grew up with a girl named Jamie, who was named after her grandfather, James. I also grew up with a male Jamie, who was called that because his mom didn't like Jimmy.
