im not a guy, but i know what it is.. Its the sternum.

You may have costochondritis. Its the inflammation of the joint between the ribs and the sternum(where they are connected). Theres usually localized pain and tenderness.

History:

The onset is often insidious. Chest wall pain with a history of repeated minor trauma or unaccustomed activity (eg, painting, moving furniture or excess exercise) is common. Pain may be described as follows:
-Exacerbated by trunk movement, deep inspiration, and/or exertion
-Lessens with decreased movement, quiet breathing, or change of position
-Sharp, nagging, aching, or pressurelike
-Usually quite localized but may extend or radiate extensively

The chemotherapy medicine that is used to treat cancer is very irritating and will destroy the small blood veins in the arm if it is put into a normal IV. So what they do is put a "port" in - this is a metal cylinder with a silicone rubber top that is sewn under the skin, and it has a plastic tube going into one of the big veins in the upper chest. The chemotherapy is put into the port through the skin with special needles (they have holes on the side, not at the tip so that they do not punch little plugs of plastic out of the port each time). The medicine going into the huge vein with lots of blood around is not so harmful. The port, being under the skin, allows the patient to bathe and swim if they wish.

sternum.. Sounds like you strained something, sometimes you can bruise the cartliage, too. It should go away after a couple of days. If not, you need to go and see a doctor.

It is most probably inflammation of the cartilage of one or more of your ribs. It is simple, but you should go and see yor GP now to make sure that everything is alright.

xiphoid (sp?) process? Maybe you have a broken or bruised rib, if you're an athlete, it's pretty common. Unfortunately, not much can be done if that is indeed the problem.
