I've been dating my Japanese girlfried now for about seven months. She came to the US as a foreign exchange student on a student Visa, then she got a job and is now on a Employer sponsored Visa. She's been in the US now for almost five years, but her Visa runs out in March.

I really do want to marry her. I'm 28 and I know that she is the one for me.

3 questions

What do I have to do to make her a citizen? Do I still have time? Where can I find out about the legal process?

Wow, your question is easy to deal with.

Marry her here in the USA. Then file a spouse petition for her with the CIS. Also file an application for change of status for her with CIS at the same time.

They will allow her to stay while the paperwork is processed. In 6 to 9 months she'll get her Green Card.

You can do it all yourself. It's not hard. If money isn't a problem you can find an attorney who specializes in immigration matters and have him/her take care of filing the forms for you.

Marry her before her visa expires, then file the I-130 Petition for Alien Relative along with the I-485 Adjustment of Status to Permanent Resident.

If you go to uscis.gov, they will tell you all the different way for you to apply on her behalf to have her stay. She'll get a visa like she has now, but it'll be a different category. The time part I don't know cause there are literally thousands in front of her. You might be able to get an immigration lawyer to help you out, but they can cost a lot of money. Good Luck!

Check with the State Department. She can check with the Japanese consulate.
Marry her if you really love her, and vice versa. Think of this as irrespective of the visa thing. Do not marry her in order to keep her in this country, alone

As Zoe says, get to a lawyer quick, before her visa expires.
