Do you really think christmas is still about god or is i totally a retail holiday now? I know muslims in the U.S. who have chritmas trees.

God and retail aren't the only two choices here. For me, it's about family.

For everyone, it's a little different. Christmas has a different meaning for me than from my husband than from my father than from my mother-in-law, but we all come together and celebrate. And we're happy to be together, so we don't insist that everyone agree exactly on WHY we're together. For which I am grateful--as the only non-Christian in the family, sometimes I worry that the god-santa-xmas-retail debate could come up. I think that's a really good way to ruin the holiday.

Just because Christmas doesn't seem to be reserved for the exclusively Christian doesn't mean that it has become a "retail holiday". Remember, many of the "christian" holiday traditions have nothing to do with the Christian faith, but are derived from pagan traditions - like Christmas trees.

Holidays in the U.S. (and abroad) haven't been exclusively for the religious for a long time - it's a part of culture, much like it has always been.

It depends on the individual. Every single person celebrates Christmas differently and thinks different things. For me, Christmas is still all about Jesus and what He did. For the person next door, it's probably just about getting presents and eating. It's up to everyone how they celebrate and what they think - and the environment and retailers can't take that away.

Christmas should really be first and foremost about Jesus Christ, his human birth. The commercial establishments just discovered what brisk business Christmas is, so everyone is cashing in on the season. Wish we could reverse this and go back to having a simple, holy Christmas.

Christmas has become over commercialized, but that's to be expected in lands as rich and spoilt as ours. Christmas is Christ's Mass and always will be, regardless of the influence of the world and man and Satan. Nothing says we have to lower ourselves to this level and nothing says we can't keep Christ in Christmas where He belongs.

I can only hope that it is a totally retail holiday. That would be wonderful. No religious BS and the economy gets a huge boost. Fantastic.

There is what many used to call the " Spirit of Christmas " and to those who still hold to this spirit it is still about God.For those who never had this spirit, it was never about God because they knew not God.

Christmas is the birthday of Jesus. However, you are right. Many people don't seem to think about Jesus even though that is what Xmas is all about. Seems that it is just about giving and recieving gifts to some people. :(
