I was reading an answer to a question..."altering your body is a mortal sin"..I wonder how valid this is. As far as I am aware, mortal sin is only valid in Catholic churchs. (please, correct me if I am wrong) I can not count how many people in a Catholic mass with peircings and tattoos...so, because you peirced yourself, you are going to hell?? (Since, a mortal sin you can not be forgiven for)
And whatever happened to asking for forgivness and being granted it? Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm right...or maybe the whole d*mn system is whack...

The idea of a "mortal" sin and a "venial" sin is a Catholic thing. In the Scriptures, sin is sin. All sin is an offense to a holy God. Only through the atoning sacrifice of Christ can anyone hope to be forgiven and declared righteous and justified before God. I would not consider piercings and tattoos a sin so to speak, but I would consider them unwise. Seems to me they are a way to draw attention to ones self, to say "look at me". We should be pointing to Christ not at ourselves. He must increase, we must decrease.

The idea of "mortal sin" is only Catholic. The only 'mortal' sins in the Catholic church relate directly to the '7 deadly sins - I do not think that having tatoos or body piercings in any way is counted as even a venial sin by the RCC. You can certainly have even a mortal sin forgiven, much less the lesser, venials sins, with the sacrament of Penance and true contriteness for your wrong. But, again, let me emphasize that "altering your body" is NOT a sin in the eyes of the church. Are you sure, though, that they were talking body tatooing and piercing and not something more like a sex-change operation? Just a thought.

There will be many people condemned for Mortal sins who are not Catholic. The degree of sin though has to do with the amount of will that went into the sin as far as going against the Commandments of God. Say if you were a member of an African tribe and the main thing for beauty is to put scars on your face and a bone in your nose , you would not be judged for that if you had never heard of the Commandments and even then it depends on the severity of disfigurement. Several very prominent Christian women have their ears pierced and it is not registered against them so , I don't know how they came up with such a blanket statement.

What theologian stated it was a mortal sin? Jesus himself was circumsized. If that does not alter something nothing does. No, I doubt it to be a mortal sin or a sin of any kind. Not everyone on here knows everything, just me. Ha!

I think that so many people are still stuck in the old testament and the old law. God loves us where we are at no matter how you look like. Its like the old homeless guy that was going to church and people and the pastor were giving him dirty looks, and at the end of one of the services the pastor told him that he would really have go home and pray about what church to go to. So at the next service the Pastor asked him if he had prayed about it, and the homeless guy said yes, God said he's been trying to get in your church for the longest time.

Man, humans are sinful by design. Jesus sacraficed for all the sins he knew humans would make. Thank Jesus and accept God and try to live on the right path. What else can you do in a world like today's?

You can be forgiven of anything!!! Yes, you should not deface your body which is a gift from God, but you certainly won't go to hell because you have a nose ring or something.
