If he is not sure he should be a car salesman, I suggest he not waste his or any dealer ship`s time and money. A not sure salesman will starve, real quick. All salesman must be able to accept rejection, and that usually starts with a phone call, and it all down hill from there. 20 negative might get you a positive, but that one may not have the buying power. A not sure person will not put up with those odds long enough to be a winner.

First off ... Check into the company he wants to work for ...
How do they pay? And what bonuses do they pay for cars?
I know my brother in law ( the one my sis married) and my father in law both either have been or are a car salesman. One worked for a company that paid him straight time minimum wages. Plus for every car he sold he earned a "pull". The cheaper cars and the used cars were the lowest number of pulls .. the higher priced car and the newer used cars where higher number of pulls.. From 1 - 5 pulls .... ( for example he sold me a 14000 car and earned 3 pulls) at the end of the day there was a board with cash in it from 50 to 1000 bucks .. I think he made a 700 dollar bonus from his 3 pulls for me... The other works for another car lot... He gets paid minium wage hourly OR! his bonus check ... and every car he sells is a certain ammount of cash... For example when he sold a Shelby Mustang ( the 2006 model) he got 1500 bucks bonus, but no hourly pay check... Next week all he sold was a used Ford Ranger ( 200 dollar bonus) But his pay check was more then 200 dollars ... soo all he got was his paycheck. But no bonus... Soo do your research before he decides to do this job

Auto sales can be very difficult. As most said, you'll have to accept rejection several times a day, and that's tough because you know what you need to do to make a living.

Sales can be rewarding though. Several years ago, i made tons of money working for dodge for several years, until the market turned, and i went to normal to low income. After a couple of years of struggling through dodge, i was blessed with the opportunity to sell for bmw. Bmw doesn't fold to the market, people with money, tend to always have money.

Good makes to sell for:
toyota ( you'll work your *** off though )
honda (you'll work your *** off)
mercedes (good money, but only the best need apply)
bmw ( good money, but only the best need apply)
nissan, ininity, acura, vw, audi. (all pretty good)

Bad makes:

Chevy (all GM) especially hummer
Ford
dodge (but i did make tons of money a few years ago)
suzuki
kia
subaru (worst customers in the world, very hard to make a living off those wackos)

Best way to do it is to see what the dealer sells during their typical month, and how many salespeople are on the floor. Also ask what the average gross is, there may be a lot of competition in the area that'll drive down profit. High gross profit, and small floor will lead to better income.

Being a sales person is not the easiest thing to do and a car salesman do not blame him ....
Find something that he likes to do, unless of course you two need the money and have kids to raise etc. Then buckle up and hope he makes the best of it.....

Car Salesmen earn alot of money if they know how to sell. The car sales world is pretty cut-throat and competative though so make sure he knows alot about what he is selling to people.

Go to the entertainment section of yahoo answers, ask this same question under the horoscope section. Give them his b-day, time of birth, and what not. They will look it up and give career advice based on his sign, and whatnot.

Also, I would ask in the morning, because more people tend to be on, so you may get more responses.

His pay will go up and down. If you can live with that ,knock yourself out. Its fun but boring. An awful lot of people just jerk your chain and buy nothing. If thats what you want have fun. Long hours and no money.
