or do the definitions of the words of the Bible miraculously change when you've been "born again"? i was just wondering because over and over Christians opine that you have to be a Christian to understand the Bible.

added query. if it's the holy spirit that causes Christians to truly undersdtand the Bible why wouldn't the holy spirit give ALL Christians the same interpretation? differences in interpretation causes schisms, sects and rivalry.

Even the church admits the bible can not be taken literally, and must be interpreted. I suppose it's possible that reading the same passages over and over can, through sheer repetition, inspire "allegorical insights", but they would be purely subjective, so what would be the point?

Two priests in two different churches can read the same exact biblical passage and extract different meanings. With so much room for interpretation, this doesn't say a whole lot for the value of the bible as a moral or ethical guide.

A reader of the bible must be an expert in mental gymnastics merely to get through the the numerous contradictions, paradox and ambiguity, before they can even begin to try and extract any useful lessons. What a wasteful process when there are so many great texts available which offer straightforward, unbiased ethical and moral guidelines with no proselytism.

The definitions don't change, the words don't change. What changes is your understanding of the bible. You understand how everything fits together. Most importantly, being a christian means u have the Holy Spirit, which reveals things to you that would otherwise be hidden.

You don't have to be a Christian to understand the bible. Many don't understand it. Many theologians study years to be able to truly understand scripture and compare current translations to past ones to learn meaning. However Christians believe the bible whether they fully understand it or not. They have faith in it truth. Those who are not Christians often can read and understand but question the accuracy of it. I woudl say that is the difference.

Your question is a bit naughty, but your point is a good one. You must be in spiritual unity with God to understand the bible and why it was written. Be cautious in your search for truth; always stay in the Holy Spirit. Any comprehension you seek without guidance from God will be offered up by satan.

Peace :)

THAT'S NOT WHAT CHRISTIANITY IS ABOUT! The Bible can be understood by anyone. Infact, most people are "born again" because of it. Just think about a sentence and what the message might be saying. I would recommend reading the book of Romans in the New Living Translation. (it's easier to understand)

of course not, you just read into it what you or your religiion wants you to see. all bible's in the u.s. have words added or changed to create or put forth the ideas of the translators. even thoe some people would have you think that anytime this is done . thoes words are marked in a way to show the change. this is very seldomly done. when the change has or makes a qusetionable statment.

They opine the truth.

The Bible made no one shred of sense to me before I became a Christian. Once I became one, it was easy to understand. The only way to know if we are telling ya the truth is to do it yourself. So we can neither prove it true, nor you disprove it true.
