My daughter is in a public school in Utah. Her teacher has been teaching them about Hanukkah. I think this is very unusual because she is in 2nd grade and they are not teaching her about what Christmas is. Would you be upset? What would you do??

Also she has been learning about the star of David. And tomorrow they are going to have traditional Hanukkah foods.

I would definately be bringing this to the attention of some very important school authorities. If they're not going to be teaching about christmas, they don't need to be teaching about hanukkah, qwanza or any other December holiday.

I think it's cool to learn about other religions but I would ask the teacher or maybe even the principal (in a non-threatening, strictly curiosity-driven way) whether this is part of an approved curriculum. It's cool to learn how others celebrate different holidays but it should be offered along side all of the seasonal holidays as well. Seems like Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa are the big 3 for this time of year and hopefully teh teacher is devoting equal time towards those holidays as well.

Is the teacher Jewish?
I think religion shouldnt be taught/practiced in school.
If she just had to teach about hanukkah then I would exspect Christmas, and other religous holidays & cultures.

I wouldn't be upset. I would explain to her that she is able to learn about another families traditions in school and that it may help her someday. You can continue to teach her about Christmas at home and instill your traditions andn beliefs. Learning about another culture or tradition is a tool that can help to build more empathtic relationships in the future. Being upset, or pulling your child away from that learning experience will give the message that differences should be hated and avoided instead of celebrated and respected.

Everyone else complains if the kids can't learn about Christmas in school and some might say to sue them. I say it's a learning experience and nice for them to know a variety of things. If you feel strongly about it go to the school board. good luck!

I dont like the idea... I personally am Christian, however this church & state/school should be seperate. Unless they are planning on teaching about every religions holidays (which I would not like) they should be teaching none! I would call the school & throw a huge fit!

Unless they are including other religions then I would be against it. Christian, Mormon, etc, should be more than one. I'd definitely complain, but then again, I do that well. I hate any kind of unfairness.

I think that is cool. Learning different cultrues and all that. But then i would expect Christamas to be at least mentioned to compare to Hanaka
