I definitely definitely recommend a Havanese. We just bought one from a very helpful reputable breeder in CT and we bring him home next week. They are hypo-allergenic (dont shed, bc they have hair, not fur), are quiet and an amazing temperament. Look into it. My breeder's website is www.renaissancehavanese.com... Tiger is my little one!

A black labrador retriever might just be your answer. They're smart, good temperament in general, happy and full of energy, and full of love. It may be just what your first dog needs: a hyper puppy.
Labs aren't that big either and get along with many other dogs. If your deciding to buy your 2nd dog from a breeder I suggest you bring your shitzu/malt with you and see how your malt thinks of the puppy.

No matter what breed you choose you may encounter another 'cranky' dog.
Temperments of dogs are part genetic & part learned.
If your dog is cranky then I suggest you start being the Leader of your pack and put this dog back in his place and in-turn reduce his stress levels.
Bringing another dog into your home whilst you have a 'cranky' dog is not an ideal situation what-so-ever.
I highly suggest that you start researching on how to become the Leader of your pack and start implementing it now.
In addition you should start researching breeds of dogs to find one that is most suitable to your own energy levels and environment.

I have a Bichonpoo who is almost 5 months old she weighs just under 6 pounds and will weigh about 10 pounds when full grown. She has the sweetest disposition she is so mellow and loving. She is very smart and easily trainable. She loves everyone and gets along with all other animals. She is the cutest little thing. See her picture at left and on my 360.

Try a spaniel of some sort (i own 2 springer spaniels). I have found that they are pretty even tempered, easy to train and only require one good walk a day. You just have to watch their diet coz they love food and can become overweight if you let them eat what they want. They are the most adorable puppies as well as cute adults.
