I have a new car that has interior vibration at certain RPM levels. The dealer says there is no vibration. I need to prove them wrong. How can I measure vibration inside a running car?

Vibrometer,Frequency analyser.
Depending upon the analysis shown by ur vibrometer, you can judge the remady like dynamic balancing of wheels or use of antivibration pads for ur engine. Check the alignment also.Frequency analyser shows all these symptoms .

A complete assessment of exposure to vibration requires the measurement of acceleration in well-defined directions, frequencies and duration of exposure. How hard a person grips a tool affects the amount of vibrational energy entering the hands; Therefore, hand-grip force is another important factor in the exposure assessment.

Most jurisdictions and agencies use acceleration as a measure of vibration exposure for the following reasons:

Several types of instruments are available for measuring acceleration, the rate of change of velocity in speed or direction per unit time (e.g., per second).
Measuring acceleration can also give information about velocity and amplitude of vibration.
The degree of harm is related to the magnitude of acceleration.
A typical vibration measurement system includes a device to sense the vibration (accelerometer), a tape recorder, a frequency analyzer, a frequency-weighting network, and a display such as a meter, printer or recorder.

The accelerometer produces an electrical signal. The size of this signal is proportional to the acceleration applied to it.

The frequency analyzer determines the distribution of acceleration in different frequency bands. The frequency-weighting network mimics the human sensitivity to vibration of different frequencies. The use of weighting networks gives a single number as a measure of vibration exposure and is expressed as the frequency-weighted vibration exposure in metres per second squared (m/s2), units of acceleration. Vibration meters equipped with accelerometers can be used for instantaneous vibration measurement. Some types of sound level meters can measure vibration.

Hope this helps, but you're not going to be able to source any of the equipment needed for less than about $500, which may not be worth 'proving' it to your dealer. Instead take a tape recorder in your car and see if you can capture the sound of the vibration on that, or take the dealer out with you on a test drive and show him.

In class I learned about a cheap little vibration measurement tool. Its a little plastic triangle(basically 2-D) with markings from the center of its base to its edge. When you stick it on your vibrating thing it will move up and down with the object and create an optical illusion of a smaller triangle inside, this smaller triangle is the part where the measuring device overlaps itself as it is displaced, and you can read off the measurement from that. The less vibration the more overlap, the more vibration the less overlap

Vibration analysis is used as a preventative maintenance tool all the time for monitoring machinery and 30hp and larger electric motors.

It uses an accelerometer to sense displacement in X,Y and Z axis.

Logging and plotting of data at routine interval is done. Trending of data indicating an increase in vibration indicates mechanical problems and gives early warning. Maintenance can be performed on a scheduled basis rather than waiting for an unexpected breakdown.

In my experience with these analysis services they are expensive to perform and require obtaining baseline reading when things are running well for comparison.

It might be easier to just take one of the dealers for a test ride with you to demonstrate the vibration. Also take an independent mechanic for a ride as well

I would try a ricketier scale Just remember this is just a educated guess. This probably would make a great Science project.
