Whether or not it's okay for him NOT to, I would let his commanding officer know that you asked him to belt you in and he refused. That's worth a complaint in my book. Just because he was within the "law" doesn't make it right. Some cops are ******* who like to show their captives/victims who's boss. The guy probably goes home and beats his wife and kicks his dog. And for all of you people assuming the asker is a criminal, I hope none of you are ever at the wrong place at the wrong time, because it could happen to you, too. Lots of innocent people get caught up in the "system" too. So don't make snap judgements. And so what if she did commit a petty crime? Does that mean she doesn't deserve her life in the case of a crash? Man, I'm disgusted with some of your answers.

Well if you are old enough to be online I'd say you must be over the minimum age/weight for requiring a baby. booster or seatbelt, and you were in the BACK seat not the front seat. Adults aren't required to wear them in the back, and it endangers the officer to be putting the belt on, especially a member of teh opposite sex. A friend of mine was a school bus driver who lost his job because he couldn't move the bus until a kid who was jumping around was belted in, as required by law, and because he was mad he went home and told his parents that he was touched "inappropriately" and without reviewing the video or interviewing others onboard the bus he was automatically fired after 13 years employment. That is what you get for trying to help keep people safe.

Carl S. is 100% correct. Oregon law does not require persons being transported by the police to be in a seatbelt. Nice research there Carl!

To the person who said people in rear seat are exempt - WRONG - your law states for driver and ALL Passengers in a motor vehicle. This would also include those in the bed of a pickup truck!
Now to answer YOUR question:
811.215 Exemptions from safety belt requirements. ORS 811.210 does not apply to:
(6) Any person who is being transported while in the custody of a police officer or any law enforcement agency.
Sorry!

ok let me get this straight?!..you did something to get yourself arrested and your worrying about a seatbelt?! come on is this a joke?!...I mean because if you were so concerned about the law you wouldn't be in trouble yourself?!!!! soif you're into breaking the law...do you always make sure you have your seatbelt on?!..Oh that's too funny I can see it now...you and your girls are going to rob a bank..but oh wait girls we can't go yet because Suzie refuses to put her seatbelt on!! lololol!!...but yes you should have had a seatbelt on...but like i said..I wouldn't be worrying about that or even having the brass balls to tell the cop that!!..let me guess you're going to sue?!

Some people think it might be easier if the criminals just got killed in an accident on the way to jail. Would save a lot of honest people from criminals.

You have bigger concerns than seatbelt issues. And yes it's true they DO NOT have to belt you in.

I don't think they have to. But then again I don't really know, never been in a situation to be arrested.
