What are your thoughts on this verse?
"31 And when the Israelites saw the great power the LORD displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the LORD and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant." Exodus 14:31

I'm not Christian, but I'd guess they fear what is incomprehensible with logical thought.

In that scripture passage I believe if you read a few verses or in the chapters before that many of the Jewish people would doubt God often and kind of mock Moses in a way. After all the plagues against the Egyptians the Jewish people realized God was 'the real deal' and feared what he was capable of (destruction) so they chose to be on the Lords side behind Moses. Psa 115:11 Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he [is] their help and their shield.
Psa 115:13 He will bless them that fear the LORD, [both] small and great.

They were humbled by His power. A bit like discovering just how much of an iceberg exists below the surface of the water, or seeing a being/creature that you have known for all your life to be good and kind and gentle show a side that you had never seen before, and this creatures utterly destroys the thing that threatens you...because it loves you. You realize suddenly how immensely powerful this being/creature is, and how easily you could be crushed by it, just as your enemies were...but you were not, because it loved you and cherished you. The sense of awe and respect that result from this sudden undedrstanding, I think, is what the word "fear" has meant.

When we read so the people feared the Lord and the words that follow, we are meant to understand that the community had to come to faith.
Moses was just the visible executor ( see15:6 ) and God actually did it. Great power is "the great hand".

Fearing the Lord is to understand that the Lord controls all and is all and handles all, you accept His leadership, with all that comes with it and fear Him with a wonderful acceptance that all things pass through His hand before it touches you, and fearing man just kind of slides out the window. God is good.As for the verse, they got the revelation of God and His being real....

To fear the Lord means to respect Him and trust Him. You fear Him in the way knowing that He is all powerful and that He is greater than you. It means to honor His place as God.

When you first come to Him, you don't understand Him and what He expects of you and how much He loves you. All you know is that He is all powerful and will hold you accountable for your sins. So most people come to Him out of fear. But after you receive Christ as your Savior, that fear of Him vanishes because you know you are put right with Him through Christ.

He has all power in His hand, He is the ALMIGHTY, He holds the power of LIFE and DEATH, He can place your soul in Heaven or Hell. Do you see a pattern. The Bible tells us to fear God rather than man. We need to respect Him.
I sure don't want the wrath of God on me. Look at Pharoh, he went against Him and His word. Look what happened to all of Egypt.

To "fear" the Lord means to realize that He is all-powerful and has control over you. To realize how little you are in relation to Him is the beginning of wisdom.

You are to fear offending the Lord. This is a gift of the Holy Spirit. It reminds you if you are about to sin. I keeps you honest. It prevents you from "tempting" God.
