My dog was outside today playing in the yard. Another dog got into the yard and the two of them...ahem...mated. I was unable to stop it before the copulation was complete but since then I brought her inside and fed her and loved on her. But she also has been acting real lethargic and sad. The dog was a good deal bigger than she was but she wasn't bleeding or anything and she wasn't hurt. Is that something that just happens with dogs after they've mated for the first time?

You need to bring her in to get fixed as soon as you can. A larger male mating with a smaller female spells disaster. The pregnancy can often kill the female and all puppies. Get her to a vet and get her fixed as soon as your vet can do the surgery. If you don't know that this is dangerous, there is no need for you to have an unfixed dog. Seriously, call your vet FIRST THING tomorrow morning to set up the spay.

I agree, get her to the vet and get her spayed. IF the dog she bred with was that much bigger you are going to have nothing but trouble.

I'd like to know, however, why WILD KAT thinks that the male dog's owner should be punished since you were out there with your female dog who you knew was in heat and did nothing to prevent the situation either... It takes 2 to tango!!!

Probably, and you may be mother soon to a few little doggies. hopefully the dog wasn't sooo big that the pups will cause her problems. you may want to get her fixed now to avoid all of that. Good luck.

Take her to the vet and get her spayed. Not only will it avoid unwanted puppies (now and in the future), there are health benefits for spayed females as they get older.

My dog CRIED when she first mated (which was accidental).
Either way, please spay her, for then she doesn't get pregnant, because a bigger male can equal tons of complications with pregnancy & birth. Don't put your dog through that pain.

She is probably bred. Keep her inside. Let her cycle complete and then watch her. Hope everything goes well. Good luck, and if u don't want any more puppies have her spayed. Luv always

YOU DOG IS FINE, JUST TIRED AND UN SURE, BEING HER FIRST TIME.
IF I WERE YOU I WOULD GET A HOLD OF THE PERSON WHO OWNS THE DOG THAT TRESPASSED INTO YOUR YARD AND BRED YOUR DOG.
THEY SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR DOG'S ACTIONS, AND ALSO THE VET BILL FOR YOUR DOG.
NOTIFY THEM IMMEDIATELY.
