a sub and more speakers combined sounds great, but not really for normal television programs (free to air tv) as they are not encoded to be 5.1 surround or anything like that.

Any movies you watch will sound awesome though =)

You can get a very good sounding surround system for around 250 bucks or so. Subwoofer alone, I would not recommend. The point of speakers (subwoofer and additional) is to put you more into the movie. A subwoofer alone will add enormous amount of bass, while adding little to nothing of anything else.

a subwoofer will only serve to drown out your tv's audio. they are best served in a dedicated 5.1/6.1/7.1 surround sound system because the amplifier/receiver will be designed to operate a sub-i:e when running a subwoofer will only come on when it receives an LFE (low freqency effects) signal from the amp (in a correct set-up a subwoofer is never on all the time-only when it needs to be) with the sattelite speakers emitting little or no bass whatsoever. your tv set would not have this function and so it would sound terrible sonically.

not really...a 5.1 surround sound system will...but just a subwoofer is going to make it probably sound worse
